Michigan based car companies, such as Chrysler and General Motors, have undoubtedly taken a lot of hits from the various economic downturns over the past few years. From massive layoffs to government bail outs, things haven’t seemed too hopeful for the U.S. Auto Industry for quite some time. Another complication that has arisen, according to Bloomberg Business, is a lack of auto engineers. Though the glass ceiling of the previous century is still holding over in certain professions, recently compiled studies suggest that the pay gap between men and women in the workplace has more to do with cultural and familial trends, rather than unfair employment practices. This is not to say that there is no wage discrepancy, there certainly is, but that new research suggests that discrimination is not the largest factor in this inequality. This article from Bloomberg.com details the ways in which the statistics point towards a workplace that is more equal than what a cursory look at the overall discrepancy in wages would suggest.

What makes a great recruiter? Well for one thing, a great recruiter stands out from the crowd in much the same way that a great candidate stands out from the crowd. A great recruiter makes sure that they are not brushed off by the candidates that they’re after, and in this marketplace, differentiation from competitors is everything. In order to differentiate, one must understand the practices and mistakes of the underwhelming majority and rise above those traits to true professional greatness. This abridged webinar gives slides detailing the tiresome practices of average recruiters and how to avoid loosing good candidates to such mistakes.

We at Accolo believe that attracting the right candidates for a job is all about the way you communicate with them-we even suggest writing your job descriptions like love letters. If you don’t believe us, look at Apple (and I know we all look to Apple for a little advice). Apple has coined the term “genius” and has attracted thousands of applicants to work their genius bar. Finding a perfect fit in a potential employee is a lot more than picking the best resume out of the stack and checking to see if they know how to dress well on interview day. Arguably one of the most important aspects in a hire is to gauge how well that person will fit into your company’s culture. But how does one go about learning how a stranger will fit in? Do you force them to meet everyone in the office speed dating style? Have an induction ritual in the parking lot complete with torches, masks and chanting? Consult the office psychic? Have a Battle Royal?

Maybe not. According to Jim Roddy, the best possible way to see how someone will fit in is to see how they’ve reacted to adverse office cultures in the past. Read on to get a detailed interviewing guide.

Even with the unemployment rate hovering around 8.3 percent, there are still industries with thousands of open positions that people are unable or unwilling to fill. Take the American commercial trucking industry. Open job postings around the country stay unfilled for months due to a lack of candidates. Many who would take the job are put off by the high cost of a commercial driving licence while the ones who could take the job are overlooked by poorly directed recruiting. What this means is that these businesses are looking to small pools of potential employees while much larger groups exist elsewhere in the country. At Accolo, we utilize a combination of our network of experienced recruiters as well as our Cloud Recruiting software to gaps like this between qualified candidates and employers. Read on to see the Wanted Analytics report on this trend.

According to the Unites States Bureau of Labor Statistics, 163,000 jobs were added to the private sector in July. Though this undoubtedly good news, the sudden surge in hiring near the end of July was not enough to offset the unemployment rate significantly. We at Accolo want to stress that there are jobs out there and that the United States’s high rate of unemployment is due, in part, to a hiring problem, that is a failure of communication and networking between companies and prospective workers. Our company has set a goal of filling one million positions in 2013 and economic growth like that in this past month is a heartening sign for the completion of this goal. The link below is an article in the Wall Street Journal and details more specifically the state of hiring and the economy in general.
